We’ve identified five important psychological principles to consider when developing a marketing plan.

  1. Persuasion

Persuasion is the act of getting someone to agree with us. We might persuade them to buy a product, subscribe to our newsletter, or vote for a certain candidate. To do this, we need to show them why the choice we’re suggesting is the best option.

Why is this an important principle to understand when designing a marketing strategy? Because it explains how to get someone to do something we want them to. When persuading someone to buy something, for example, we want to give them a reason to do so and we need to communicate this clearly to them. A persuasive message might look something like this: “This is a really great shirt. It’s got a fantastic design and great fabric. Plus, the print is super vibrant. You’ll look great in this shirt, too.”

  1. Relevance

Relevance is when a customer finds a message or a product they want to buy to be useful or meaningful to them. For example, if you’re trying to sell me a product, relevance is what makes me interested in knowing more about it, as well as what makes me think this product will help me solve my problem better than anything else on the market.

In terms of marketing, relevance is a key principle because if you can make a product or message relevant to someone, it makes them more likely to want to do business with you. Here are some examples:

Authority is a feeling or belief that an individual or group is qualified to tell us what’s best for us. We trust people who we perceive to be more knowledgeable than ourselves. This includes people who are respected in their field and have a good reputation. We believe they’re knowledgeable and we have confidence that what they’re telling us is true. They’re likely to have expertise in areas that we lack.

We all have them; some of us are really good at them and can make people laugh at a moment’s notice. But not many people know about dad jokes—you know, the ones that come from dad and sound like a joke but aren’t one? To use a dad joke, you need to identify an emotion that is related to your product, service, or brand. The goal here is to connect with people emotionally. Learn everyone’s names and the names of your colleagues. Make a friend. Be open, friendly, and outgoing. Show respect to everyone. It will reflect back on you. You never know when that person might be in a position to make your career. And remember, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
