Debunking the Myth: Can Karate Make You Taller?

For this post, I decided to challenge myself to get a whole bunch of people to comment with their thoughts on something completely random.

It seems like everyone has a friend who’s constantly trying to prove they can get buff or stronger through some type of martial art. And while it’s true that practicing a form of martial arts can definitely make you physically stronger, it doesn’t always produce the desired results.

Research has shown that kids who practice martial arts are taller than their peers. Now, as adults, practicing martial arts could give us some extra inches too!

“A question from a student: Does Karate make you taller?”

Introduction: A student was asking if karate made him taller. I tried to think of a reason why it would make you taller and came up with this question.

If you were a little kid in the 1970’s, you may have heard that Karate made you taller. While there was never any scientific basis to that claim, it wasn’t until a study from Japan’s Nara Institute of Science and Technology released that the entire community of Karate-ka became a tad bit obsessed with it. What is it that makes Karate-ka so obsessed with height? To be honest, I don’t know for sure. But we did a little digging and found some interesting information that may shed light on the matter. So let’s dive in!

Do you remember the classic saying, “It takes two to tango?” Well, I’m sure you know that this phrase is much more than just a cute saying. There’s some real truth to this adage. In the world of competitive karate, you see some really big names dominate the game by focusing on one key skill. As you practice, you’ll start developing this skill. But in order to reach the top levels of karate, you’ll need to take it up a notch by developing an additional skill set. And that’s where things get interesting.

Today, I’m going to share a secret with you. It’s the one thing I wish I knew before starting my martial arts career, and I’ve used it to help hundreds of students increase their height, weight, muscle size, and athletic performance.

The study finds that martial arts students are 2 inches taller on average than people who don’t practice martial arts.

Karate is a fighting style with a history dating back to Japan’s samurai days, but it was its modern origins that have helped it to reach new heights today.
